The GDDPC in partnership with the Sainte-Marie Community Garden and the RIC Kent Community Garden Program collaborated with École Mont-Carmel on this food security project for youth and families in Ste-Marie-de Kent.
Students participated in the installation of raised garden beds. They helped to sow several varieties of vegetables indoors, as well as various varieties of flowers to attract pollinators. Students transplanted these vegetables and flowers in the garden boxes placed on the schoolyard. They also sowed carrots, beets, potatoes and onions.
During the summer, a team of students and their parents helped with the maintenance of the garden, such as weeding and watering from the water barrel. In the fall, grade 5 students were guided through the harvest with the help of the RIC Kent Community Gardens Coordinator. The students prepared a meal with the help of their teacher and the school chef.
The participation of several partners, including the Community Action Fund of New Brunswick, and the Vice-Versa Program of the Fédération de la jeunesse canadienne-françaises, created the support and enthusiasm to establish a food security program in Sainte-Marie de Kent.
