Dieppe - As part of this workshop we explored Dre Catherine Mah's evaluations from the Dalhousie University Food Policy Lab in conjunction with the organization SENB Foods about municipal food policies.
The question we asked ourselves; what can food do for our local government and the community? First of all, in agriculture, we have to recognize that we are still producing in unseeded Native American territories.
Health is a human right and should promoted and held as a priority. Good health starts with good nutrition. We can use food as tools to build our community. It already influences personally our daily decisions and our budgets. That being said we can also influence our local governments to focus our resources on building a healthy, sustainable and connected community.
Food insecurity affects 1 in 8 family settings; 1.7 million Canadians experience food insecurity.
Food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food which meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.
Together, and only together, can we achieve a healthy, sustainable and safe food system. This choice begins with you and with your will for a community that serves your basic needs and for your wellbeing.
