This moth which Stuart Tingley photographed on the shingles by his back door on June 16th has been confirmed by experts at the Canadian National Collection of Insects (Collection nationale canadienne d'insectes) in Ottawa as the first Canadian record of a Scribbled Sallow Moth Sympistis perscripta. Capture moth
This species is primarily found in the southern US but there is a population that occurs up the east coast as far as southern New England. It is considered a Species of Special Concern in most of the northern part of it's range and it will be interesting to learn if New Brunswick has a breeding population. John Klymko at the ACCDC in Sackville has notified provincial experts to be on the watch for the very distinctive caterpillars of this species which are reported to feed on Linaria and Antirrhinum.

Another jewel in the amazing biodiversity of the Pays de Cocagne!!
