Alces alces (Orignal/Élan d’Amérique)

Did you know that a moose likes to eat aquatic plants and can reach them down to 5 metres under water. It can hold its breath for approximately one minute! It lives in the forests, in clearings or in cutting areas, in marshes and ponds.
In winter, it feeds on berries, twigs, branches and bark while in summer, it eats mostly leaves and plants.
Humans are its major predator. Black bears, cougars, wolves and wolverines are also a threat to the moose but the last two have disappeared in New Brunswick.
Moose are often seen at dusk or dawn. Their enormous frame, between 222 and 635 kg, sometimes results in fatal consequences in road accidents.
Moose have many ways to attract a partner. The male will dig a hole, urinate and roll in it while the female has a scream that can be heard three kilometres away.
Moose hunting is allowed in New Brunswick and licenses are allotted through a draw. Consult the Provincial Hunting Guide for more information. The moose population is either increasing or stable in most areas of the province. A total of 2,464 moose were killed from September 23rd to September 25th 2010, an increase of approximately 2% from 2009. The 2010 season was the best since 2001.
Moose hunting was part of the New Brunswick culture and kitchens before ATV’s and trucks made it easier. Let’s celebrate our heritage while respecting its biodiversity!
