Whether it be at home or at work, office supplies and electronic devices can have a significant environmental cost.
With the advent of new technologies, we may have thought our offices would no longer require paper, but that is not the case. Although recycling and recuperation efforts are improving, paper and paper-based products still represent a significant percentage of waste in Canada.
The use and maintenance of computers, printers, photocopiers and ink cartridges are part of office management. Simple measures can help us better protect the environment as well as save money.
For example, the Pays de Cocagne Sustainable Development Group has been reducing its print publications and printing on both sides of the paper for a number of years. This has led to a considerable reduction in paper consumption. This practice has also reduced the overall operating costs for the organization and has saved on storage space.
Below are 10 simple actions you can take in order to make changes for a healthier planet.
- Use 100% recycled paper and choose office supplies (notepads, planners, envelopes, etc.) that contain a high percentage of recycled materials.
- Program printers and photocopiers to print on both sides of the page and recycle your used ink cartridges.
- As often as possible, publish your documents as electronic versions and add a note in your e-mail signature that encourages recipients to consider the environment and print only if necessary.
- Choose rechargeable batteries for your devices.
- Buy Energy Star certified computers, printers and photocopiers, which consume much less energy than standard devices. A laptop consumes approximately 80% less energy than a desktop computer.
- Send your old computers, printers, photocopiers and cellphones to the recycling depot or donate them to not-for-profit groups.
- Single-use cups are wasteful- bring your own instead.
- Use LED bulbs and turn off the lights at the end of your work day.
- Program your thermostat to warmer or cooler temperatures according to office hours.
- Some devices consume energy even when they are not in use. Turn them off during mealtimes and unplug them at the end of the day by using an extension bar with multiple outlets.
