The province of NB has listed 406 (2004) bird species. In the Cocagne watershed, 244 species have been recorded to date (2017).

The order of the species listed below follows that of the Peterson Field Guide to Birds.

Thanks to Louis-Emile Cormier for keeping the list up to date. We welcome your comments and your observations, thus helping to further our knowledge.

The photo above shows the Great Blue Heron, a very common resident and nesting coastal bird in Cocagne. In 2006, 219 nests were counted.

Upcoming activities

May 2021 - Challenge: No mow May and observe pollinators

"DON'T MOW IN MAY" is a movement that is starting to gain momentum in Canada. The idea is to help pollinating insects, including butterflies and bees. In May, food is scarce for these insects and the dandelion is one of the few flowers that can provide them with nectar.

The municipalities of Dieppe and Moncton are urging their citizens not to mow their lawns or leave unmowed areas on their lawns. They are suspending the application of their streets and sidewalks by-law which stipulates that the lawn must be less than 20 centimetres for the month of May.

And to complete the challenge: Photograph pollinators on dandelion flowers.

People are invited to stop for 20 minutes in front of a dandelion flower and photograph the insects that stop there. Send your photo to Am.i.e.s Nature <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.;;
