Shediac Cape - Approximately 55 waterfront lot owners and interested people attended the informative "Coastal Restoration" workshop with Rosmarie Lohnes, CEO of Helping Nature Heal, on March 16, 2019 at Young Smith Hall in Shediac Cape.

 CLH0466

Several participants came from around Cocagne, Grande-Digue, and Shediac. There were also representatives from environmental groups from Cap-Pelé, Quispamsis, and Rimouski, Quebec in addition to a representative from the Climate Change Secretariat in Fredericton. Participants appreciated the presentation on living shorelines given by Rosmarie Lohnes, CEO of Helping Nature Heal. A field trip, snacks and her practical tips, as well as gifted wildflower seeds were welcomed by participants (see video of the presentation).

Helping Nature Heal's advice for living shorelines:

  1. Reduce mowing –and leave a buffer zone along the shoreline.
  2. Add biomass (leaves, algae, etc.) to the banks, ex. between rocks.
  3. Do not burn debris.
  4. Use removable stairs to access the beach.

Co-organizers of the workshop, Pays de Cocagne Sustainable Development Group, Shediac Bay Watershed Association, In Giardino Garden Club and Shediac Cape Community Garden, intend to invite Rosmarie and her team back to our area during the summer of 2020 to carry out field work and give a second practical workshop.

See article on the workshop in the Times & Transcript.
